Hokkaido – a world-renowned fishery kingdom abounding in rich natural seafood


Located at the northernmost tip of Japan, Hokkaido has four colorful seasons with significant snowfall in winter and mild weather in summer. The island is surrounded by three seas – the Sea of Japan, the Pacific Ocean and the Sea of Okhotsk, and is known as one of the world’s foremost fishery areas where a wide variety of seasonal fish are landed. This fishery kingdom boasts one-fourth of Japan’s total catch, most of it being natural rather than cultured seafood. Chum salmon 秋鮭Sea scallops 扇貝Kelp 海帶(昆布Wild Hokkaido salmon caught in autumn 北海道的秋鮭是在秋季捕獲的天然鮭魚。Hokkaido’s chum salmon are a product of wild. Born in rivers in Hokkaido, they grow large in the sea over the course of around four years before returning to the rivers. They are called “autumn salmon” because they return to their natal rivers in autumn. Wild “autumn salmon” is rich in protein and low in calories.Globally renowned Hokkaido sea scallops 名冠世界的北海道扇貝。 Thanks to its thoroughgoing fishery efforts, Hokkaido sea scallops were certified as products of sustainable fishing practice by the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC), an international certification body, in 2013. Hokkaido sea scallops are highly valued worldwide as being safe, trustworthy and delicious, and are exported to Europe, the U.S., Asia and other regions.Hokkaido kelp serves as the foundation of washoku(Japanese cuisine), in which Japan takes great pride. 北海道的昆布是日本引以為傲的「和食」的基礎。 The appeal of kelp lies in its umami, which is a taste sensed by the tongue like saltiness or sweetness. Most Japanese dishes are made based on soup stock with the concentrated umami taste of kelp. Kelp is rich in dietary fiber, and around 90% of kelp consumed in Japan is harvested in Hokkaido.
